Podcasts are a great to learn and build your network. It might not be a personal network but it’s good to build a great network for free. James Altucher has one of the best self help podcasts out there, and I learn a lot from his podcasts. I wanted to start writing summaries of what I learn and how they relate to other self help guidance.
James Altucher’s podcast with John Paul Dejoria was one of the most informative podcasts that I’ve heard recently. It’s also important because JP Dejoria is a billionaire and one of the most successful people on the planet.
John Paul Dejoria Bio
John Paul Dejoria is the cofounder of Paul Mitchell hair products with Paul Mitchell.
He is 74 years old and still very active
I listed some things I learned from the podcast below.
JP’s Everyday Life
It is always good to know how the most successful people in the world approach their everyday life. John Paul provided some insight into this in the podcast. I highlighted a couple areas below.
JP’s Nutrition – 90% vegetarian. Eats toast with butter in the morning. It seems like a lot of successful people are buying into the plant-based diet right now.
Sleep – he doesn’t sleep very much. He said he sleeps about 5 hours a night or less.
Similarities with other Entrepreneurs/Business People
JP has multiple streams of revenue which is common among the richest people in the world. He has the famous hair product line Paul Mitchell and he also owns the Patron tequila line among many other companies.
Another thing that he has in common with other entrepreneurs is that he is constantly building new businesses. He is currently working on a new phone that he believes will replace the iphone.
Multiple philanthropic pursuits. John Paul contributes to and has established multiple philanthropic campaigns and companies. He is also closely networked with the richest people in the world because he has decided to give a large portion of his money away similar to Bill Gates and Warren Buffet.
Don’t be afraid of rejection
John Paul Dejoria had to face a lot of rejection early on in his career. He said he faced a 99% rejection rate when he was first trying to sell encyclopedias.
He faced a lot of rejection in his sales job. Many people have started in sales.
Sales is important
JP was a master in sales and that helped him a ton in his professional development.
Tim Ferriss also had a sales job and so did Vishen Lakhiana.
Sales teaches you a lot about yourself and forces you to change your approach to relating to people. The most successful people face rejection down and become really amazing sales people. The techniques they learn becoming great sales people serves them well when they become entrepreneurs.
Reframing Tough Situations
Changing your frame. This is something that I learned from Awaken the Giant within and it appears that JP also used this to his advantage. He changed his view and frame of the product that he was selling. He was selling encyclopedias but he called them a local education program when he showed up to people’s front doors.
JP Is Always Happy
Another notable thing that JP said was that he’s always been happy. This is probably because his rules for happiness are very easy. This is also something else that Tony Robbins talks about in the book Awaken the Giant Within.
In order to be like JP you just need to make your rules for happiness a lot easier.
John Paul also took that same mindset everywhere he went. It seems like he had great charisma around everyone he interacts and that helped him in sales and building successful businesses.
Another person that talks about being happy and its ability to change your life is Christie Marie Sheldon. She believes that you should try to express emotions of Love, Joy, Peace or Enlightenment in order to obtain massive amounts of success in your life. She says those are the vibrational frequencies that the most successful people in the world experience.
Negative things that happened to JP
Another common thing with successful entrepreneurs is that they fail many times and get back up. A few of John Paul’s failures are below.
He was homeless twice
He couldn’t get a supplier
He didn’t know anything about the hair business yet he built one of the most successful hair products in the world.
Despite these failures John Paul is a very successful businessman. You also have to face failure in order to succeed.
Relationships are important
A lot of the stories that John Paul told were about how he knew the right people and connected them. This is very common with entrepreneurs. You have to get connected in your industry and rely on those connections once you get a good product.
Another thing is that you have to connect people. In the book captivate by Vanessa Van Edwards, she says that connecting people is a great way to build lasting relationships.
Views on Life
JP has a view that he is very lucky. Most successful billionaires and entrepreneurs have this belief. Byron Allen in a later episode of the Altucher podcast also had the same view on life.
Many billionaires and millionaires have a belief that they are the luckiest person on the planet.
Lessons from JP
1. Don’t be afraid of rejection
2. View yourself as the luckiest person alive
3. Don’t let failures get you down- john paul was homeless twice.
4. You learn a lot about business from sales – he faced rejection
5. Change your frame – JP changed his communication when selling encyclopedias to customers. He asked them if they were interested in learning about a local education program instead of buying encyclopedias
6. Relationships and connections are important – JP knew the right person more than once in his life because of his ability to build and sustain relationships.
7. He built more than one business
8. He’s involved in multiple philanthropic pursuits including the bill gates and warren buffet
9. Nutrition and health is important – he eats a very healthy diet and eats vegetarian most of the time. JP is 74 and he has a ton of energy. One reason this might be is because
