Is Self Improvement Worth it?
Many people ask the question is self improvement worth it? In my mind, that’s like asking if breathing air is worth it?
If you aren’t trying to improve yourself, then what are you trying to do?
First off, you are asking the wrong question if you are asking is self improvement worth it.
Most people probably mean something else.
They want to read an article about why self help books don’t work or why self help books are useless so they have an excuse to not work on themselves.
I can provide you with a synopsis on what those articles will say. They will say that self-help makes people aware of issues they weren’t previously aware of, so those people become more miserable because now they have more issues to deal with. The other reason self help books don’t always work is because self-help requires you to do the work. You will only improve if you do the work that a self-improvement book or seminar requires you to do. Oftentimes, books and seminars require you to adopt habits. Habits are hard to develop. Because self-improvement isn’t a magic pill, people writing trendy articles like to say it doesn’t work.
Everyone can always improve. You are actually designed to improve. People get bored without novelty. If you stay the person over your whole life, then you will feel terrible. Why not find a way to improve yourself in order to entertain yourself.
This doesn’t mean that you need to buy every self help book out there or attend every seminar. You should find areas in your life where you are struggling or want to get better and buy a book on that subject. Don’t buy a self-help book that everyone tells you to buy. Those are the books I usually don’t like because they don’t apply to me. They apply to the person that bought them. Buy a self-help book on a topic of your choice and try improving on that point.
Most self help books cost less than $20 and provide exercises to get better in that chosen subject area. Most self-help experts charge over $500 or $1000 for seminars. Buying a $10 or $20 is totally worth it if it means you will improve yourself and find fulfillment.
There are self improvement books and seminars on relationships, business, fitness, etc. Why not take a chance that you can improve yourself. Of course self help is worth it.
Are you worth it?
If you don’t believe self improvement is worth it, then you are saying that you aren’t worth it. You are saying that you believe you are perfect the way you are and that you don’t want to do any work. Self improvement is in our nature. It’s what drives us forward whether you like it or not. If you aren’t trying to improve yourself in some way each day, then you are likely depressed or just unconsciously floating through life. Those states are fine if you are ok with that, but most people will never find satisfaction in those states without taking some kind of action towards self improvement.
